Utahraptor was the largest dromaeosaurid ever found — a heavyset cousin of Velociraptor and Deinonychus built on an entirely different scale. Utahraptor was the largest dromaeosaurid ever found — a heavyset cousin of Velociraptor and Deinonychus built on an entirely different scale. Adults reached roughly 4.5 to 7 metres in length, stood with the head about at the height of a tall person, and are estimated to have weighed between 280 and 800 kilograms. Everything about the skeleton speaks of power rather than pure speed: thick hind limbs, a broad pelvis, stout arms tipped with long curved hand claws, and a stiffened tail braced by bundles of bony tendons that worked as a counterbalance. On the second toe of each foot sat the famous sickle claw, its bone core over 20 centimetres long and, with its horny sheath, longer still. No skin impressions are known from Utahraptor itself, but because feathers are documented in several close relatives — Velociraptor even preserves quill knobs on its forearm — modern reconstructions show it clothed in a shaggy feather coat with feathered arms rather than bare scales.

Utahraptor lived roughly 139–135 million years ago, in the Barremian stage of the Early Cretaceous, in what is now eastern Utah, USA. Every confirmed specimen comes from the Yellow Cat Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation, notably the Gaston Quarry and Dalton Wells sites near Arches National Park, and the enormous Stikes Quarry block. The setting was a semi-arid lowland of braided rivers, seasonal lakes and floodplains, with conifers, ferns and cycads — flowering plants had not yet taken over. Utahraptor shared this landscape with the heavily armoured Gastonia, iguanodontians such as Iguanacolossus and Hippodraco, the long-necked Moabosaurus and small early mammals.

Utahraptor is the largest dromaeosaurid known to science — about as heavy as a large horse.
The sickle claw on the second toe had a bone core over 20 cm long, and was even longer with its keratin sheath.
The species name ostrommaysorum honours palaeontologist John Ostrom and Chris Mays of the company Dinamation, which helped fund the excavations.
It was first named ostrommaysi, but the spelling was corrected to ostrommaysorum in 2000 because it honours two people.
A nine-tonne sandstone block from Stikes Quarry in Utah contains several Utahraptor individuals of different sizes, possibly animals trapped in waterlogged sand.
Utahraptor became Utah's official state dinosaur in 2018, and in 2021 it got its own park: Utahraptor State Park.
Although no feathers have been found on Utahraptor itself, it is reconstructed feathered based on well-preserved close relatives.
Its description in 1993 coincided with the release of Jurassic Park, whose oversized 'velociraptors' happened to match Utahraptor's real size.

VERIFY:geological_stage: stored=barremian suggested=valanginian confidence=high — New radiometric and carbon-isotope chemostratigraphic work on the Yellow Cat Member places the Utahraptor-bearing Stikes Quarry horizon at roughly 135 Ma, i.e. Berriasian–Valanginian rather than Barremian. The older Barremian assignment (about 126–130 Ma) is superseded by this dating, which made the taxon roughly 10 million years older than previously assumed.

VERIFY:weight_max_kg: stored=500 suggested=800 confidence=medium — The 2024 femoral-scaling analysis recovers substantially higher masses for the largest Utahraptor material, with the biggest referred specimen estimated at close to 800 kg, well above the stored 500 kg ceiling. The stored maximum reflects the older typical-adult figure rather than the upper bound now supported.
