Overview
Yutyrannus huali was a large early tyrannosauroid, reaching roughly 7.5 to 9 metres in length and weighing an estimated 1,100 to 1,450 kilograms. It walked on two powerful hind limbs with the body held horizontally and a stiffened tail extended behind as a counterweight — no part of the tail dragged on the ground. The skull was long and comparatively narrow next to that of Tyrannosaurus rex, carrying a low midline crest along the snout and small bony rugosities above the eyes. Unlike the later tyrannosaurids, Yutyrannus had three fingers on each hand and noticeably longer arms. The most remarkable feature is the plumage: all three known specimens preserve simple, filamentous feathers reaching about 20 centimetres in places. These were not flight feathers but hair-like filaments comparable to coarse down, making Yutyrannus the largest animal known from direct feather evidence.
Its behaviour is less well understood. The three specimens — one adult and two smaller individuals — were reportedly recovered from the same block of rock, which the describing team suggested might hint at group living. The material was, however, acquired through fossil dealers, and the circumstances of discovery could never be verified in the field. The gregariousness hypothesis should therefore be treated as an untested interpretation rather than established fact: carcasses of different sizes can accumulate in a lake basin, or several animals may simply have died in the same volcanic ashfall. The long legs and lightly built skull point to a mobile, actively hunting predator rather than a slow scavenger.
Yutyrannus was a carnivore. Its jaws held recurved, serrated teeth well suited to slicing through flesh and tendon, but its bite lacked the bone-crushing power that Tyrannosaurus rex later evolved. Its ecosystem included the armoured Liaoningosaurus, early ceratopsians such as Psittacosaurus and a wealth of smaller feathered theropods — plausible prey for a predator of this size. Juveniles and subadults very likely took smaller prey than adults, a pattern well documented in other tyrannosauroids.
The species was described in 2012 by Xu Xing and colleagues in the journal Nature, based on three specimens from the Yixian Formation of Liaoning Province in northeastern China. The name mixes Mandarin and Greek: yǔ means "feather", tyrannos means "tyrant", and the species name huáli means "beautiful". The discovery made headlines at once, because it showed that even very large predatory dinosaurs could be feathered — something many researchers had doubted, arguing that big animals struggle to shed excess body heat. The Yixian Formation's climate was cool temperate, with an estimated mean annual temperature of around 10 °C, making insulation a plausible function for the plumage.

Yutyrannus lived during the Early Cretaceous, in the Aptian stage roughly 125 to 122 million years ago. Every known specimen comes from the Yixian Formation of Liaoning Province in northeastern China, part of the famous Jehol Biota. The landscape was a mosaic of conifer forest and early flowering plants around lakes and rivers, on plains periodically blanketed by volcanic ash. Those ashfalls and the oxygen-poor lake beds explain the exceptional preservation of soft tissues such as feathers. Mean annual temperature is estimated at around 10 °C — a cool temperate setting with distinct seasons.

Because the fossils were bought through dealers and the site was never scientifically documented, this remains an uncertain interpretation.
