Zalmoxes robustus
Zalmoxes robustus was a small, heavily built plant-eating dinosaur that lived on Hațeg Island, in what is now Romania, at the very end of the Cretaceous. At roughly 2.4–3 metres long and with body-mass estimates usually falling between 150 and 400 kilograms, it was no giant, but it was solidly muscular.

Chapter • Meet the dinosaur
Zalmoxes robustus was a small, heavily built plant-eating dinosaur that lived on Hațeg Island, in what is now Romania, at the very end of the Cretaceous. At roughly 2.4–3 metres long and with body-mass estimates usually falling between 150 and 400 kilograms, it was no giant, but it was solidly muscular. Its skull was short and deep, with a powerful lower jaw, a pointed horny beak at the front and rows of broad, strongly ridged cheek teeth. The hind limbs were short and robust for the size of the body, the forelimbs comparatively small, and the long, stiffened tail was carried horizontally as a counterweight – no Zalmoxes ever dragged its tail. Exactly how Zalmoxes moved is still debated. Most researchers regard rhabdodontids as mainly bipedal animals that could drop onto all fours while browsing quietly, in other words facultatively bipedal. The stocky torso and short legs do not suggest a fast runner but rather a deliberate grazer that relied on cover among the vegetation. Whether Zalmoxes lived in herds is unknown, but several Hațeg Basin localities preserve numerous individuals in the same beds, which at least shows the species was abundant and moved across the same floodplains. The teeth and jaw muscles reveal a specialised herbivore. The coarse, ridged cheek teeth and the unusually deep dentary indicate that Zalmoxes could process tough, fibrous plant material – ferns, cycads, conifers and the early flowering plants that grew along the island's rivers. The beak cropped vegetation, which was then ground between the tooth rows. The first bones were collected around 1900 by the Transylvanian-Hungarian baron and palaeontologist Franz Nopcsa, working on fossils from the Sânpetru Formation of the Hațeg Basin. He initially referred the material to the genus Mochlodon, as M. robustum. In 2003 David Weishampel, Coralia-Maria Jianu, Zoltan Csiki and David Norman showed that the Romanian fossils deserved their own genus and named it Zalmoxes after Zalmoxis, a deity of the Dacians of ancient Transylvania. Today Zalmoxes is one of the best-known examples of insular dwarfism in dinosaurs: the animals of Hațeg Island were smaller than their mainland relatives.
Chapter • Where it lived
Zalmoxes robustus lived roughly 72–66 million years ago, during the Maastrichtian at the very close of the Cretaceous. All secure finds come from the Hațeg Basin and adjacent areas of Transylvania in western Romania, above all from the Sânpetru and Densuș formations. At that time the region was an island – Hațeg Island – within the European archipelago. The landscape consisted of river valleys, seasonally flooded plains and open woodland of ferns, conifers and early flowering plants. Zalmoxes shared this world with the dwarf hadrosauroid Telmatosaurus, the armoured Struthiosaurus, the small titanosaur Magyarosaurus and the predatory Balaur.
Chapter • Wild behavior
Many individuals of Zalmoxes have been recovered from the same fossil-bearing layers, showing that the species was abundant on Hațeg Island. Whether this reflects genuine herding or simply the accumulation of carcasses by rivers cannot be determined. No direct evidence of group behaviour, such as trackways or monospecific bone beds of animals that died together, is currently known.
Zalmoxes is named after Zalmoxis, a deity worshipped by the Dacians of ancient Transylvania.
It lived on Hațeg Island, part of the archipelago that covered much of Europe in the Late Cretaceous.
The genus is a textbook case of insular dwarfism: it was smaller than its mainland rhabdodontid relatives.
Its lower jaw was unusually deep and powerful – hence the species name robustus.
The first fossils were collected by Baron Franz Nopcsa, who was also a linguist and an Austro-Hungarian spy.
Two species are recognised: the smaller Z. robustus and the larger Z. shqiperorum.
Zalmoxes is among the most commonly found dinosaurs in the Hațeg Basin.
